I OBSERVED A VAGINAL DELIVERY IN THE LABOUR WARD TODAY~!!!111
omg omg omfgggggg
im still in such a state of euphoria and wanting to shed tears of joy so this entry will be pretty incoherent
.
In any case im really glad im back @ SGH for my Obstetrics & Gynae posting, because the students @ KKH are not allowed to see deliveries. However, the students @ KKH get to see abortions, so i guess that’s pretty fair. But I’d rather watch a birth over an abortion any time.
I definitely prefer SGH a lot more than KKH, don’t really like the considerably slowrelaxed work pace, or perhaps its just the ward staff. Apparently, Trisa thinks so too! Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that way — because most of my attachment mates prefer KKH as they prefer working with kids and more colourful environments.

OMG I OBSERVED A VAGINAL DELIVERY IN THE LABOUR WARD TODAY~!!!111
the delivery suite just looks like a damn normal room nothing special about it srsly with all the dramas i seen, i ttly expected an operating theatre can. haha.
.
The first case which I saw, it was this young couple. The wife grabbed on to her husband on one hand, me on the other with all her MIGHT. for 2 hours she’s been pushing and pushing. the baby’s head could already be seen when the midwife seperated the labia minora, just a bit more descendment, the doctor could be able to use the vacumn and assist the delivery! but she really couldn’t do it anymore– gave up and opted for a caserian section. I was damn disappointed! I felt like shaking her– WRRRRY. ITS ALREADY THERE. UR CERVIX HAS ALREADY DILATED 10CM, YOU PUSHED FOR 2 HOURS, JUST A BIT MORE, THAT LITTLE BIT MORE, WRRRRRY.
the midwife advised her “if you do a normal vaginal delivery, its only 1 day of pain. If you opt for a cesarian, its one week of pain.”
But she still entirely gave up.
Maaaan, i felt sooo wasted for her, I mean, not only does a cesarian cost more, the pain and the scar left! I think she’d regret it in future - the feeling of your baby coming out from your womb is just so different!
Anyway, the doctor had to PUSH the baby back up from the vagina into the stomach. what a wasted effort. My hand was being grabbed so hard for nothing, my efforts telling her to push and all the ‘jiayous!’ in vain.
Aww, but I guess she really tried her best.
.
The second case - the OMG I OBSERVED A NORMAL VAGINAL DELIVERY CASE! By the time I entered the delivery suite, you could already see the baby’s head descended at the cervix since the bulge at the vagina was just SO HUGE. the mother’s damn pro and fast! The doctor inserted a pair of scissors in, trying to expand the opening. Suddenly, the amniotic fluid, it BURST! literally, really, BURST! it spilled everywhere. what a mess. And then, i was like, OMG whats that green thing thats coming out at the opening. turns out that’s the baby’s hair! it looked kinda green due to the amniotic fluid/blood. Before I knew it, the whole head popped out! Doctor immediately used scissors and cut the rest of the vagina below the baby’s head. AND THEN THE WHOLE BABY CAME OUT! I was expecting the newborn to be bloody- BUT NO BLOOD at all! The baby is covered in white powdery-like thingum, i think its the amniotic fluid! The whole process was damn fast, only 1 - 2 minutes! Umbilical cord was clamped and cut immediately. It’s a BOY! Baby Boy greeted the whole new world by spraying his ‘fire hose’ and pee’d into the midwife’s face, and then his parent’s face. hehe.
Baby was immediately put in his cot next to the bed and the other midwives and doctors did suctioning, vital signs, cleaning and such. Baby’s cry was so cute.
.
Meanwhile, at mummy’s side. Doctor retracted the rest of the umbilical cord out from the mum, and out came the HUGE placenta! Umbilical cord was blueish/gray btw. these were thrown into the large dish. Then, came the stitching up of the vagina. >_<! Doctor took up the damn gigantic Bolus injection needle with local anaesthesia inside and injected about 5 sites at the vagina. followed by ouch, the stitching. But I guess, the delivery was so painful- by then the cutting/stitching of vagina was no shit to the mum already.
.
Oh, and, both mothers which i watched in labour, they didn’t scream like what tv dramas show it to be. Just moaning yeah.
.
It was such an… OMG experience. euphoric feeling much? kinda makes me wanna shed tears of joy. My 2 other friends who were in the delivery suite with me, we totally hugged each other once we came out, high 5ed and i was soooo excited i kinda jumped!
.
Before I saw a delivery, i still had no idea what specialization would I want in future. Now, I think i may want to take up an Advanced Dip in Midwifery! I’ll probably want to work in SGH’s O&G/Neonate ward when i pass out, followed by an Advanced Dip in Midwifery. For now, at least. Who knows when i’m doing my posting at operating theatre I might want to work in an OT instead! went into the OT reception the other day and it was so snazzzyy cool. Except that they wear crocs with scrubs! haha!
